Lieutenant is a military or police force rank that represents an under-, or junior, officer of commission. This rank, and its derivatives, are often the second tier of commission in most militaries, and the third tier of responsibility in police forces.

In Imperial Service[]

Template:Rank plate The Galactic Empire utilizes the lieutenant rank throughout its varied forces, including the Imperial Navy, Imperial Army, Imperial Starfighter Corps, and Stormtrooper Corps. On a smaller to medium sized vessel in the Imperial Navy, a lieutenant may be a senior officer, possibly the vessel's executive officer. On a larger sized vessel, such as a Star Destroyer, a lieutenant is not high enough to command, but is usually in charge of a section of a vessel's operations. A lieutenant can also be an aid to a senior officer.

A lieutenant is usually still green (compared to field grade officers) but has more experience than a Sub-Lieutenant and demonstrates further tactical thinking and leadership.

A Lieutenant was the equivalent to a Flight Lieutenant in the Imperial Starfighter Corps.

In New Republic Service[]

In Union Service[]

The Caspian Democratic Union utilizes the lieutenant rank in their Navy, Marines, and some units of their Provincial Army.

In the Navy, most lieutenants were officers of department (or responsibility) aboard warships, or were even the executive officer on cutters or sloops. They typically had one to four midshipmen working beneath them. In the Naval Aerospace Arm, a lieutenant was a more experienced pilot, often leading a section of the squadron, with command of the squadron led by a Captain, Commander, or Lieutenant Commander.

In the Marines, the lieutenant ranks are the lowest grade of officers, and in line units invariably appear as platoon commanders. The Marine Aerospace Division was much like the NAA in its use of lieutenants, but there would be more of them in a squadron than the NAA equivilent. Due to different rank scales, a Marine Lieutenant is of lower grade than a Navy Lieutenant.

Provincial Army units utilized the lieutenant rank quite liberally <content needed>...

In Union circles, by tradition, the rank was pronounced leftenant.

In Griffon Service[]

The lieutenant rank was liberally used as a formality, and best described the leader of a SAT peloton. Lieutenants were also present on Armada warships, but the nomenclature was more an indication of role than of rank formality.
